Welcome to Kalvi's blog + podcast series, where linguistic education becomes access and stories become opportunity!
My name is Harini Logan, founder and president of Kalvi, and I'm so glad you're here. I created this series with one goal in mind: to raise awareness. That "awareness" is targeted towards many important topics like sociolinguistics, the spelling bee, educational access, and more. But overall, it's directed towards one thing: linguistic education, and the many benefits it has for students across the world.
What is this project?
It’s a blog. It’s a podcast. It’s a growing collection of ideas, conversations, and resources about language, literacy, identity, and work in education.
I'm speaking with educators, linguists, spellers, researchers, community leaders, and nonprofit pioneers: people who are asking and working on important questions about how language and education both shape who we are and what doors they open for us. I'm also sharing resources, reflections, and stories that span from the spelling bee stage to classrooms to policymaking and beyond.
At its heart, this platform is about linguistic education as a tool of opportunity. Not just better grammar or test scores, though you'll find that those go hand in hand with learning more about the English language, but deeper things, too. These include richer vocabulary and clearer writing, understanding where our words come from and why that matters, thinking critically about the words we use and how and why we use them, and building linguistics into classrooms and communities.
Why now?
Because language access is power, and too often, who gets that access still depends on factors like income or geography. Because we want students not only to succeed in school, but to see themselves in language and a story in every word they learn.
And because we believe that when young people understand the history and beauty of the English language in a way only linguistic education can provide, they don't just read better. They see the world differently.
What can you expect?
-Podcast episodes with brilliant guests who bring language and education to life
-Blog posts that reflect on everything from etymology to education policy
-Resources for learners, educators, and families
-Thoughtful takes on spelling, advocating, working in education, and all the stories in between
Whether you're a student, parent, educator, or word nerd, I hope you'll explore with us.
Language and linguistics are everywhere. My goal is to help students learn to see it—and use it—as the powerful tool it is.
Welcome to the journey!
